Behavior, Attendance, Dress Code

Dear Parents and Students,

 

As a school and the entire district, we are working to make our school environment a place where everyone can be connected, safe, healthy and learn. We plan to do our best to listen and partner with you so that our students have a successful year. We hope this letter finds you committed to being engaged with your student’s learning, helping your student maintain strong attendance and supporting your student's positive behavior choices. Behavior Policy (Policy JK)
As a school we believe it is imperative to have a learning environment that is safe, conducive to learning and free from distractions. We are committed to supporting students in learning respectable and safe behaviors while at school so that teachers can educate, and all students are able to learn. Please ask your student to show H.O.W.L.S. behavior at school.

Students will be held to a high behavioral standard to promote an environment where all students can excel and learn. Major violations of safety include physical altercations, drugs and sexual misconduct. These infractions may result in out of school suspension and/or further disciplinary action. Students and parents will need to be committed to and supporting positive choices to have access to all the learning possibilities that District 11 has to offer. We are dedicated to keeping Adams ES safe for all students, staff and families.
 

Cell Phones Policy (Policy JK, JICJ)

All students will keep cell phones, watches, and all other electronic devices in their backpacks from 7:35-2:35 daily. Please know that you can call the office at 719-328-2900, dojo the teacher, or email staff to relay a message at any point to your child and we will get it to them promptly. Medical devices - see office for exemptions.

 

1st offense- teacher takes until the end of the day

2nd offense- phone goes to the office, admin will call guardian to pick it up

3rd offense on- Admin and parent/guardian will meet and devise plan to address the need

 

Our school is committed to safety and any necessary communication between students and parents/guardians.

 

Dress code (Policy JICA)

Colorado Springs School District 11 is committed to a learning environment that is safe, conducive to high student achievement and free from unnecessary disruption. The District’s dress code provides guidance for schools on the implementation of school level dress codes. Individual school principals may develop their own dress code policies within the guidelines set forth by board policy JICA. Exemptions to this dress code for special occasions or for personal consideration are at the discretion of the school principal. 

 

  • Clothing worn as designed, which covers all private parts of the body, to include midriffs and backs (tank tops- 2 inches across at shoulder).
  • Clothing that is part of an extra-curricular activity, approved by the building principal. 
  • Clothing that fits properly and does not expose undergarments. 
  • Clothing that is the appropriate length, including hemlines no shorter than mid-thigh for shorts and skirts. 
  • Clothing that is free of excessive holes, rips, and tears that expose private areas of the body or undergarments. 
  • Clothing approved by the building principal- NO hoodies or hats in the school in order to capture the profile of all students and visitors to promote safety.
  • Clothing, paraphernalia, and jewelry that contain appropriate messages, free of references to sexually suggestive activity, drugs and alcohol, gangs, or are obscene and profane, hateful, or disruptive to the footwear that protects a student’s feet is required; learning environment. Slippers and bare feet are not allowed.

Equity & Enforcement

  • Dress code will be enforced consistently and respectfully.
  • Staff will avoid public correction of students
  • When concerns arise, staff will work with students and families to resolve them in a supportive manner.
  • If a student violates the dress code parents will be notified and we can support the student with an alternative option when available.

Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Students should come prepared with jackets, hats, gloves, etc., for outdoor recess

We go outside in most weather conditions. Please let us know if you need support with this.
